Day 2 4-6-2015
Not much to say about today except that we woke to a rain
that kept us from doing any walking. As
we hit the highway the rain intensified.
The next 80+ miles into Memphis were really wet. Luckily, most folks were driving sanely. As we drove by Mud Island in Memphis, Jan got
to see the “Pyramid”. At that point we
could see the Arkansas line sign on the bridge crossing the “mighty Mississippi”. Good by Tennessee we will see you in a few
weeks. The next 40 miles into Arkansas
were like experiencing a 5.5 earthquake.
Maybe Arkansas can talk with their former “first lady” as she runs for
President to improve their road system.
The day ended in Russellville, AR in the foothills of the Ozarks, beautiful
rolling hills with lots of lakes.
Day 3 4-7-2015
So far so good. Most
of my concerns concerning the RV have been proven to be false. YEA!!!
This morning we hit the road for Oklahoma. One of the only problems we had was that I
set a pair of socks on one of Jan’s uncoverd pens. Since ink was wicked into the heal of the
sock. The result was that I became a “blue
healer”.
The bad roads of yesterday were almost equaled today. Along with the all bad roads we were met with
some rather strong winds(25-30 mph). The
winds worked magic on my ability to keep the RV headed in the direction of the “white
lines”. They also caused the
transmission to work considerably harder.
All along the road today were Indian owned casinos. Some were very beautiful. As we arrived in Oklahoma City the road
improved and the winds subsided. What a
beautiful city. The interstate was
groomed by colored concrete on the bridges and overpasses. Last night at our campground, the fellow next
to us recommend that we stop at a city park in Sayre, OK. He hit the nail on the head. The little park is beautiful. But it is a “dry heat”. Tomorrow we plan to be in Palo Duro Canyon for
the next couple of nights.
Day 4 4-8-2015
The campground has golf, swimming pool, playground, miniature
golf, walking track, RV campground, ball fields and last but not least a rodeo
arena. I’ll bet this little town doesn’t
have 5000 people in it. Jan and I walked
early and then hit the road. Daylight
does arrive until after 7:00am. We just
had a 4 hour trip to Canyon, TX. About
12 miles east is Palo Duro Canyon. When
we arrived and setup, we drove over to PD Canyon. This is a beautiful place. We had originally planned on staying there,
but had changed our mind when we saw what we would have do to camp there. First, the grade and curves into the canyon were
more than I wanted to put up with, second, there is no cell coverage and no
wifi. We have come to expect these
pluses as a necessity. While in the
canyon, we scouted out some trails to hike.
We have picked out two that some other hikers recommended.
The weather today has been fairly good. Up on the “high plains” the temp reached the
low 80s and down in the canyon the temperature was in the upper 90s. The temperatures were not the issue, the wind
was horrendous. It blew dust everywhere
and the little bit of rain made it into sprinkling mud. Our RV now looks not so good.
I hope to have some pictures online by the weekend.
