August 7
Another
beautiful day! The temperature started
out about 60 and we reached a high of maybe 72.
Since we had fog on our last visit to Acadia, we decided to go back and
see as much as we could of Acadia NP.
Our first visit was disappointing but, today we got to see why this Park
is so high on so many people’s list.
Thunder Hole was the first stop for us this morning since we were not
there at high tide the other day. Arriving
about 30 minutes before high tide we decided to wait it out. High tide is when
the spray explodes through the Thunder Hole and it makes a thundering sound.
The crowd was extremely large. People
were all along the railing and on the rock cliffs overlooking it. We waited and waited but NO spectacular sprays
of sounds from the hole. Sometimes
things just don’t work out like I would like for a good photo.

Back to the
car and on to something new,
Cadillac Mountain.
Again, the crowd was tremendously large.
I would compare it to going to Clingman’s Dome after10:00. Parking was scarce to nonexistent and I had
to dig into my inner self for control and patience. Finally we found parking place. The hike around the top of the mountain
allowed a 360 degree view
of the island and the other islands surrounding it.Cadillac Mt. |
From there
we went back to the loop road and stopped at “Sand Beach”. We had no idea what to expect before
stopping there. All we knew was that
there was a line of cars nearly a mile long visiting there. Knowing that we were probably never going to
come this way again, we decided to stop anyway.
After finding a parking place, we walked to the beach. It really is a beach. In a cove, there appeared to be about ½ mile
section of sandy beach. That is what
they advertised but that wasn’t what I believed would be there.
Fooled again by true advertising. The beach was surrounded by high rocky
bluffs. Actually was very pretty. It was
a beach just like any other beach with all kinds of people lying on towels
sunning.

It was
finally getting time to head for our evening meal. We had been hearing of the lobster pound
called
Thurston’s ever since we arrived, and actually before we got here. Well it lived up to its reputation. Lobster is bought by the pound (live) and prepared while you wait. WOW WOW
After we ate, we waddled over to another area called “Ships Harbor”.
This is an inlet that is accessible at high tide. There is a beautiful little trail that paralleled the coast. We felt like we were in a gnome forest. Luckily, we escaped without incident.
