Trip to Acadia (Mt. Desert Island) After 3 tries we made it.

August 4

Trip to Acadia (Mt. Desert Island) After 3 tries we made it.

Our day began with a walk throughout Freeport, with the intent of seeing more of the beautiful New England homes.  We have had such a great time looking at this architecture.
One final stop by LL Bean to see a couple of stuffed moose that were found locked (antlers) together in the woods several years back.  I understand that LL Bean along with the state went into the area where their carcasses had been found.  I heard that there was nearly an acre of land devastated by the two while they were alive and locked.  Each of these moose weighed about 1100#.  They were bigger than most horses. The moose starved to death while they were locked together. Bean mounted them and they are on display in the store.

We loaded up and decided that we would take US 1 up the state rather than take the interstate.  Being skeptical about this course, I asked the park owner.  His encouragement for taking US 1 was all it took for us to go.  I put the address in our GPS and the next thing I know is it begins a battle with me.  It was encouraging me to go the interstate.  But, using the old fashion method of navigation, a map, we overrode the GPS.  After about 50 miles it gave in and directed us the way we wanted us to go.

The coastal towns were beautiful.
Even though, as we drove through the small towns, we were bogged down briefly by traffic.  After all it is August in Maine.  Being force to drive more slowly we were able to view more of the towns, a real treat.
About 40 miles before we reached Acadia, we came upon a totally unusal bridge for this area.

Since one of our goals when we made it was to see the famous Bass Harbor Light House, this is where we went after setting up our “home”.

Jan thought the Head Light House in Portland was more impressive.  I won’t weigh in, since the lighting wasn’t what I had hoped for.
The rocks were tough walking and with all the other tourists trying for the best picture, patience had to be used.  Some folks don’t understand that they aren’t the only people wanting to photograph the scene.  I understand if you are setting up and trying for different angles but, SHOOT AND GET OUT OF THE WAY.  With the fog laying on the harbor conditions weren’t ideal. There will be a better time later.

Ending the day, we found a restaurant for lobster and clam chowder.
That was a great way to finish a great day.
